let’s get organized!

I am an out-of-sight, out-of-mind kind of cleaner. I stuff things in bags, drawers and closets and pretend they don’t exist. There are bits and pieces of my life that are organized, but plenty of areas that can get out of control very quickly- my office, my craft supplies, the pantry. My desk is a disaster most of the time!

I am definitely in nesting and organizing mode, but organizing your home can be overwhelming. It is hard to figure out where to begin. Like many of you, I am going to attempt to get organized this year. This is my plan:

Baby Steps. Conquer one drawer or closet at a time. If you try to organize a whole room you will become overwhelmed and give up. I like to start with a bathroom drawer or desk drawer. Once you get going, it feels so good to purge and organize, hopefully, you will keep going.

Keep. Store. Donate. The first step is to purge. Get 3 boxes or make 3 piles of items you want to keep, donate and store. Then go through the “store” pile one more time and make sure you really need to keep it. Unless it is a sentimental item, if you have not used it in 2 years then toss it.

Contain it. Storage containers are your friend. Personally, I like clear or mesh containers for my pantry and office so you can find things easily and you can easily access items without opening multiple containers. I also love canisters with clamps for food items and office supplies. I prefer glass containers for food and acrylic containers for art and office supplies or anything my kids might use. For the garage I use clear drawers or stackable tubs. If everything has a place, you will be a lot more likely to keep it organized.

Label It. Labeling is very important for baskets, tubs or anything that is not clear, but can really be helpful even with clear containers. I love using removable chalkboard stickers or gift tags to label containers, because it makes the label a little more fun.

I don’t know if my house will ever be as organized as these pictures, but I am going to try to get it organized bit by bit. Wish me luck!

Happy Organizing!
