Now that Spring Break is upon us we are starting to go through our warm weather wardrobe to see what we might need for our upcoming days at the beach. We fell in love with the look of straw totes embellished with brightly colored pom poms and knew it would be a cinch to re-vamp our straw beach bags with some diy pom poms of our own! It really was so simple and inexpensive to do this little project and we love how it made our plain totes look so festive…don’t be surprised if you start to see pom poms on everything!
- 4 Skeins of yarn in the colors of your choice (1 skein is enough yarn to make 2 medium-sized pom poms)
- Large sewing needle
- Straw tote bag similar to the one in this post
Step 1: Start by wrapping the yarn around four of your fingers, 300 times…yes it sounds like a lot, but it goes very quickly! When you reach 300, snip off the end of the yarn. For a smaller pom pom, wrap the yarn around three of your fingers.
Step 2: Slip the yarn off your fingers, keeping the wrapped shape in tact.
Step 4: Cut a piece of yarn about 12 inches long, secure it around the wrapped yarn and tie a knot very tightly.
Step 4: Slip the scissors through the loops of one side of your wrapped yarn and cut the top of the loops. Repeat the same step on the other side.
Step 5: Now for the fun part! Fluff up your pom pom and give it a little hair cut, making all the ends even and giving the pom pom a nice round shape.
Attaching the Pom Poms to your Bag:
Attaching the pom poms to your bag is very easy! Start by deciding where you’d like to place each pom pom on your bag. Then thread a large needle with one end of the long string on the pom pom and sew it through to the back of your bag. Repeat this step with the second long thread on the pom pom. Tie the two ends in a knot at the back of your bag.
Repeat these steps to tie the remaining pom poms to your bag. Voila…a simple way to update your classic straw tote!
