more than just a shirt

The beauty of a white shirt is that it goes with everything, and what we love even more about the classic white button down is how crisp and clean it is. It adds polish to the most casual of shorts and freshens up a simple skirt. What’s even better, the classic white button down looks amazing on everyone! We’ve rounded up our favorite ways to dress our simple white shirts up or down:

Button Down with Shorts

A white button down instantly dresses up pair of tailored shorts. We especially love them with brightly colored pastels and a statement necklace. J.Crew has a great selection of white button downs. Hallman is wearing J.Crew’s Stretch Perfect shirt, which is more fitted and has a slight stretch, so it looks more structured and polished.

The classic button down also looks great with a pair of shorts in a fabulous print or simple stripe. We paired J.Crew’s Boy Shirt with blue and white stripe shorts. The Boy shirt is perfect if you are looking for a more relaxed fit, but with that crisp look. These shorts are last season from the Gap, but they have a similar pair available now.

Casual, yet Polished

A white button down can make a casual pair of pants or jeans look more polished and put together. Here we paired ours with Splendid’s slouchy athletic pant and metallic Vans.

We also tried layering our white shirt over a long sleeve tee and love the outcome! We are constantly dressing in light layers in LA so adding a white button down into the mix is perfect for us. The key is make sure you layer your white shirt over a light-weight t-shirt with a graphic or print. We layered ours over a Saint James tee, but it would look just as cute over this or this.

Here we mixed our relaxed, J.Crew Boy Shirt with fitted army green pants and a hint of color from red ballet flats and Clare V mini duffle. Sadly, the Clare V mini duff is no longer available in red, but we found this magenta DVF tote (on sale!) and this red Kate Spade tote that would look equally as fabulous! Pair them each with coordinating shoes and you’re done!

Dressed Up:

When you find a piece that works, why not buy it in multiple colors! You may recognize this skirt from our Holiday party attire post, Hallman wore it in black. Express now has the same full skirt in the perfect vibrant salmon, which we love for Spring and Summer. Unlike a lot of flared skirts, this one is flattering on all body types because it is fitted through the hips. To make this look more fun for Spring, we tied the shirt in front and layered in some bold jewelry.

Nothing says Springtime like white on white, so we paired our J.Crew Stretch Perfect Shirt with a white lace skirt. We added a neutral belt and shoes, and a bright pop of color with this Samudra clutch. Ashley’s lace skirt is last season from J.Crew Factory, but we found an Embroidered Mini and a Kate Spade eyelet skirt, either of which would look amazing!

For the ultimate in “recycled” fashion we decided to see if we really could wear an old bride’s maid dress again…and we love how it turned out! Hallman originally wore this green strapless dress at her sister Casey’s wedding. Thanks Casey for choosing a fabulous, bright color! With a little trip to the tailor to shorten it to just above the knee, we were able to pair it with our classic white button down, tied at the waist, a Samudra clutch and a bright statement necklace!

Happy Styling!
