christmas tree crafts for kids

Our kids’ Winter break starts in 2 days! We are looking forward to a few weeks that don’t involve packed lunches, rushed mornings and afternoon activities. While we are looking forward to taking it easy, we will still need to figure out some activities and crafts to fill all the extra hours. This is not the time of year to start elaborate projects, so we came up with some simple crafts that will be easy for parents and fun for kids!

Colorful Paper Christmas Tree

FullSizeRender

To create our colorful Christmas tree, cut thin strips of brightly colored paper. Next cut out a square or rectangle for the trunk of your tree.  Give your kids the colorful strips of paper and show them how to trim each strip to make each piece a little shorter than the last. You can use a glue stick to cover your paper, or glue each strip on separately. If your kids are young draw a triangle for the tree and let for your kids glue the strips of paper on the triangle in any way they want. We used a star punch to create the star, but you could easily cut one out freehand or use a stencil to make the star.

Paper Straw Christmas Tree

FullSizeRender-4

We have an extensive collection of paper party straws in our pantry. We thought we would be fun to use them as a craft supply. First cut a straw so that it is about 5 inches long, this will be the base of your tree. Cut the next straw slightly shorter than the first straw. Keep cutting and adding straws, each one a little shorter than the one before it. We also alternated stripes and polka dots straws.

Once you have created a Christmas tree shape, take one long straw and place it on the middle of the tree, making sure the straws stay in place. Use a  glue glue to secure the first straw to the tree. Add another line of glue directly on the straws. Glue another long straw to the middle of the tree, creating the trunk. Add more glue until the straws feel  secure. Trim the trunk to the size you want.

Using the same star punch,  create a star. Add glue to the base of the star and slide it in between the two layers of straws at the top of the tree. You can add one last piece of straw to the top if you need to cover the glue. You can easily add a ribbon loop to the back of the tree if you want to turn this craft into an ornament.

Happy Crafting!

need a new spf for your face?

I try very hard to live each day without an ounce of regret…however, if there is one thing I could go back in time and do it would be to shake some sense into my 16 year old self and get her to WEAR SUNSCREEN. Especially on my face. As an older and hopefully wiser woman, I know the effects that sun can have on our skin only too well so I religiously wear sunscreen on my face every day. I even carry several varieties of sunscreen in my hand bag at all times: one for my face, one for my lips, one for Mia’s face, and one for the body…along with an assortment of wide brimmed vizors and hats in the the car. The bottom line is that you can never have too much sunscreen!

ARCONA Reozone SPF 40

While I haven’t discovered a time machine so I can go back and talk some sense into my younger self, I can help prevent further sun damage with any number of the sunscreens available today. There are so many to choose from, it can be very dizzying! Trust me, I’ve tried them all. Right now I am a big fan of Arcona’s Reozone SPF 40. I love this sunscreen because of the high SPF and oil-free, gentle formula with a slight tint. It blends in beautifully, I haven’t suffered from any breakouts and the price is pretty great too ($22). There really are so many amazing face sunscreens out there, but I’ve picked a few of our favorites that will work for almost anyone:

favorite-face-sunscreens

1. We featured Peter Thomas Roth’s All Day Moisture Defense in our favorite moisturizers post a while back, and we love this formula so much that we had to include it among our favorite sunscreens. PTR’s All Day Moisture Defense with SPF 30 is the perfect anti-aging moisturizer for daily use. It has a non-greasy formula that blends in seamlessly and it doubles as your daily moisturizer. ($42)

2. Josie Maran’s Argan Daily Moisturizer with SPF 47 is a lovely daily moisturizer infused with the skin nourishing ingredient: Argan oil. This moisturizer’s combination of anti-oxidents and Argan oil will leave your skin looking radiant and protected. ($32)

3. We love the whole Dr. T’s Supergoop line, so it was no surprise that we would like their Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen with SPF 40 as well. Rich in Omega’s, Supergoop’s lightweight Soothing Mineral Sunscreen calms redness and irritation, and is perfect for sensitive skin. ($28)

4. Dr. Goldfaden’s Sun Visor SPF 30 spray is genius! Because of the spray applicator, you can spray it on in the morning before your regular moisturizer and then again throughout the day without disturbing your makeup. This ultra-light, fast absorbing formula is perfect for those of us constantly on the go…just spritz and your done; no rubbing or blending needed. ($45)

5. Epicuren’s Zinc Oxide SPF 27 is an amazing sunscreen for daily use. It blends in easily, is non-greasy and never made me break out. It’s gentle formula works well on sensitive skin so you can apply and re-apply through the day without worrying about irritation. ($33.95)

6. Brush On Block Mineral Sunscreen with SPF 30 is another great option for sensitive skin. Mineral powder sunscreens are super easy to apply, are translucent and can be worn under or over makeup, which means you can apply it throughout the day whenever needed. Brush On Block’s product and applicator-in-one also make this sunscreen perfect for travel (no more tubes exploding mid flight). ($30)

Now go out there and lather it on, and don’t forget your hat too!

lipsticks…summer brights

Beautycounter Lipsheer in Scarlet

Nobody does bright lipstick better than Jenna Lyons, Creative Director for J.Crew. She regularly sports NARS Lipstick in Heatwave, which is the perfect matte, orange-red lipstick. We just love her barely there makeup and bold, bright lips for Spring and Summer. On days when we aren’t ready for that fully bold lip, a sheer version is the perfect way to go, which is why we also love Beautycounter’s Lipsheer in Scarlet. Wearing a bold lip is an easy and inexpensive way to jump start your look, especially in the Spring and Summer. A couple of tips for wearing a bright lip…skip the matching lipliner, it will make your lips look too harsh. You will also want to keep the rest of your make up simple. Think mascara, tinted moisturizer and a hint of bronzer to keep you from looking too washed out. Whether red, coral or pink, there are so many amazing bright lip colors out there, and it can be hard to sift through all of them to find the perfect one. We’ve tried them all, done the sifting for you and come up with our favorite bright lipsticks and glosses.

our favorite moisturizers

ptr camu camu moisturizer

When I find a product I love, I stick with it…which can be a good thing, but I recently realized that what once worked very well on my skin wasn’t as effective as it used to be. I decided it was time to refresh my skin care regime and introduce a new moisturizer. I tend to have a combination of skin issues that need tackling (hyper-pigmentation, fine lines, monthly hormonal breakouts), so finding the right moisturizer can be tricky.

We are so lucky that we live in a time where technology has brought us some amazing skin care products…there really are so many great brands out there, it is hard to narrow it down! I have always loved Peter Thomas Roth’s skin care line and I like this new Camu Camu Brightening Moisturizer. My skin feels hydrated, firm and it’s helped even my skin tone. After some trial and error we have come up with what we think are the best moisturizers for almost any skin type:

favorite-moisturizers

1. Peter Thomas Roth Max All Day Sheer Lotion ($42): This daily moisturizer with SPF 30 doesn’t clog pores, absorbs quickly, helps fight the signs of aging and hydrates beautifully. One of the best, most effective moisturizers with SPF out there!

2. Algenist Genius Cream ($110): An amazing anti-aging cream! This cream offers intense hydration making skin feel firm and refreshed. It absorbs quickly without being heavy or greasy.

3. Korres Black Pine Firming Cream ($68): Korres is a beautiful line, with natural, quality ingredients and this new cream is no exception. Skin feels restored and firm…and it smells fantastic!

4. Glamglow Thirstymud Hydrating Treatment ($69): My good friend and beauty industry exec, Amy swears by Glamglow’s Thirstymud, we tried it and have to agree! This calming, intensely hydrating cream locks in moisture and improves skin’s elasticity and texture. Our skin felt dewy and fresh long after we applied it.

5. Supergoop SPF 30 City Sunscreen Serum ($42): Supergooop’s anti-aging SPF cream is another one of the best SPF daily moisturizers out there! It’s light weight, absorbs quickly, is not greasy and helps combat the signs of aging…all while protecting your skin from the sun.

6. Perricone MD Hyalo Plasma ($135): Packed with three types of Hyaluronic Acid, this treatment does wonders for the skin. Hyaluronic Acid binds moisture to the skin, leaving it more firm and toned while revitalizing it’s elasticity.

7. BeautyCounter Everyday AM Hydrating Cream ($40): BeautyCounter’s beautiful, light-weight formula is perfect for daily hydration. Rich with anti-oxidants, it fights the signs of aging, leaves skin feeling soft and well hydrated.

our favorite kids’ bath & body products

DSC_0202

When you first become a parent, one of the many things you worry about is your baby’s skin. It seems so perfect and sensitive and you don’t want to be the one to mess it up! Isn’t mommy guilt fun? We consider ourselves lucky that there are so many amazing products out there these days for babies and kids. While there are an abundance of amazing products to choose from, we have found it challenging to find products that not only we like, but that our children like too. We may like the way a product works, but our kids might not want to go near it for whatever reason. We’ve put together a sampling of kid’s bath and body products that are loved by us and our children.

The Honest Company has been a long time favorite of our families. While our kids are no longer in diapers, we still use  many of their household and bath & body products.  We both love the shampoo + body wash, conditioner and the bubble bath during bath time. All of the Honest bath products are great for babies and kids. We also adore their hand sanitizing spray that we mentioned in our Traveling with Kids post because it is light, has a wonderful scent and your hands feel soft after you use it.

Hallman was recently introduced to BeautyCounter’s kids line by her friend Carlisle. It is nice to know that all the KidsCounter products are safe for kids and the Squeaky Clean body wash is really gentle on their skin.

froggie towel 2

Post-bath time we use Dr. Robin’s Daily Moisture Cream for Children. Ashley’s pediatrician recommended it after a vacation in the mountains where Mia’s skin became very dry. It rubs in well, is super moisturizing and is fragrance free. We also love Burt’s Bees coconut & pear lip balm because it hydrates delicate lips really well, and the kids love it because of the yummy smell!

Living in sunny L.A., we have to put sunscreen on our kids every day. Ashley is a huge fan of Sun Bum’s sunscreen products because they are effective and Mia likes them because they smell so good! Hallman loves MD MOMS babysafe sunscreen towelettes because she can wipe it on both of her boys so quickly they barely even notice.
